Don’t get me wrong, trends can be fun – but timeless staples are what you’ll reach for year after year. Investing in versatile, high-quality basics creates a closet that feels effortless, stylish, and adaptable, whether you’re heading to brunch, the office, on vacation, or simply running errands.

Here’s my list of summer wardrobe essentials every woman should have in her closet.
I wear a white button-down at least once a week. For me, it’s the perfect I-don’t-have-to-think outfit finisher, making it incredibly versatile. For the summer months, I swap over to linen for more breathability. Wear a white linen button-down open over a swimsuit, tucked into denim shorts, paired with tailored trousers for work, or tied at the waist with a skirt for dinner. Linen is naturally breathable and only gets softer with time, making it one of the smartest investments for warm-weather dressing.
There’s a good amount of discourse online about “jorts,” but finding the right pair for your body denim shorts can easily be your go-to summer staple. I’m not going to lie, finding your perfect denim short match may take some trial and error, but once you do, chef’s kiss.
Look for a mid- or high-rise silhouette with a slightly relaxed leg rather than anything overly tight. A longer inseam often feels more polished and offers extra comfort while still looking modern.
Allie’s Styling Tip
Wide-leg linen trousers have become a modern classic for good reason. If I need to look pulled together for a meeting, a dinner or date night, I am always reaching for a pair. They’re comfortable enough for the hottest days while instantly elevating a simple tank top or T-shirt. Neutral shades like ivory, sand, olive, or black maximize versatility and pair effortlessly with everything already in your closet.
A quality white tee is the foundation of countless outfits. I own several different brands and fabric weights. Choose one with substantial fabric that isn’t overly sheer and a fit that skims the body without clinging. Whether layered under a blazer, tucked into shorts, or worn with a midi skirt, a great T-shirt always looks fresh and timeless.
Simple ribbed tanks in white, black, and beige are some of the hardest-working pieces in any summer wardrobe. They’re perfect on their own with linen pants or layered beneath lightweight shirts and jackets. Because they’re so versatile, it’s worth investing in high-quality fabrics that maintain their shape after repeated washing.
Every woman should own at least one dress that requires almost no styling. For my money, I invest in a white cotton dress and a silky slip dress. A dress in cotton or poplin can transition effortlessly from daytime errands to evening dinners simply by changing your shoes and accessories. A silky slip dress can also do the same, but elevate it a bit more so that you look more polished.
I think it was Kim Cattrall who said that she refuses to be in a situation where she’s even the least bit uncomfortable. I’m not sure if she was referring to fashion items, but I have that same sentiment for my shoes and clothing. A pair of well-made sandals in tan, black, or metallic complements nearly every summer look. Choose a style with supportive straps and quality construction so they’re comfortable enough to wear all day.
